We first became interested in doing America's Great Loop five years ago. We were watching a show on HGTV in which they referenced the inter coastal waterway. We looked it up and were intrigued. From there, we learned about America's Great Loop and were immediately interested. We jointed the America's Great Loop Cruisers Association and started planning our trip.
One of the first things we had to do was find a suitable boat. At the time we owned a 32 foot Bayliner. We decided that although it was loop capable it was not loop comfortable. We did a lot of on-line shopping and after viewing quite a few boats in the US and a beautiful one in Ontario we decided on a Carver 460. We continued to shop around for boats, looking mostly for Carvers. The first time we saw a Carver 396 we were hooked. It had everything we wanted for space, features and "curb appeal". We found one Carver 396 in Ontario but just couldn't get the deal put together. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. I fully believed, all along, that when we were ready to buy the right boat would be there for us. Living in New Brunswick we did a lot of travelling trying to find the right boat. Within a week I found our boat in our home province and at a price we had budgeted. The previous owner was amazing and our dream became a reality.
We named our boat the "Foxy Flamingo". We first saw the name in Nags Head, North Carolina while on vacation. It was an amazing Boutique called the Foxy Flamingo Boutique. We contacted the owners and asked if we could use their logo and name. They very graciously allowed us that privilege. We plan on visiting them when we get to North Carolina.
We will be leaving for North Carolina on October 7th. The crew consists of the Captain, my husband, the Admiral, me and our beautiful little French Bulldog, Cora. We have allowed ourselves two months to get to our destination. Once there we will spend the winter months, December to March in the Northwest Creek Marina in North Carolina, and then head north to start the Great Loop.
I will begin blogging our trip south once we leave on the 7th. In the next few days I will add a few pictures of our boat.
